  • Oxford Futures – Which Way Forward?

    Central Oxfordshire is at a critical point in its development. If local authorities and other agencies work together the area can be a model for ‘smarter growth’. But if each considers only short-term priorities, the area will lose its position as the home of a world class university and 21st century knowledge-based enterprises. This is the basis of the report “Oxford Futures – Achieving Smarter Growth” and its “Call for Action” summary whose launch on 31 March 2014 drew a high level audience to hear five short but challenging responses.

    On 31 March 2014 Oxford Civic Society launched a major report “Oxford Futures – Achieving Smarter Growth in Central Oxfordshire”. It argues that Central Oxfordshire is going to grow. It can grow smartly and we can all benefit. Or it can muddle its way through and lose out to better organised places. It says the only way to solve the problems arising from these growth pressures and bring about a prosperous future for the region is for all the different agencies to work together. This needs visionary leadership from the leaders of our communities, businesses and universities. The report calls on them to work together to achieve smarter growth.

    On 10 September the third ‘Oxford Futures’ event was held under the title of ‘The Way we Live’. The event comprised an afternoon symposium and workshops, and an evening debate following three talks. Both sessions were well-attended and all the presenters gave authoritative reports on a wide variety of topics. The stimulating discussions that followed led to conclusions on issues of huge importance to the future of Oxford as a delightful and economically successful city in which to live and work.
